I have been writing and teaching writing since 1982 when I received my Masters Degree in Creative Writing at the University of Washington. After years of teaching freshman composition at colleges in Seattle~s Puget Sound area and being pleased with the essays my students wrote, I turned my courseware into a book. After four printings with Writer~s Digest Books, Writing Personal Essays: How to Shape Your Life Experiences for the Page has been updated as Writing and Publishing Personal Essays from Silver Threads in San Diego. Although it was written for people out of school who want to write from personal experience, it has been adopted for use by schools and universities and appears in bibliographies for teacher training materials. In addition to teaching over the last decade for Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Pima College in Tucson and writer`s conferences in the western and southwestern states, I published three more books for Writer`s Digest Books, started Writingitreal.com, an online magazine for people who write from personal experience, and launched LifeJournal for Writers, a software tool for keeping a writer~s journal.
I have coached hundreds of people through the process of using the best essay style for their material. I help them find insight and discovery by writing their experience in well-shaped essays, ones that are alive for readers because they are alive for the writers. The best writing comes from the specific details of one`s experience. I love the personal essay for its capacity to evoke experience and allow both the author and the reader the pleasure of experiencing life relived in contemplation. Such life informs, enlightens, entertains, moves and persuades. Real people sit on admissions committees, and they respond to the well-written, well-shaped essay. I take great pleasure in assisting Accepted.com`s dedicated and committed clients in writing detailed essays about the way their experiences and insights demonstrate strength of character and leadership qualities.
