I graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a BA in 1986, and from the University of Maryland with an MSW in 1989. I was a social worker at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and then at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC until 1991. I left Duke because of a family move to Yokohama, Japan. After my stint at Duke, I taught English for the two years I lived in Japan, and helped high school students and college students prepare for English language competitions. By the time I returned to the States, I had two young children and wanted to find a balance between work and family. I took a position on the Duke University Law School Admissions Committee, where I read, reviewed, and evaluated application essays. Another move to Knoxville, TN, precipitated yet another job change, this time as an English tutor at a community college. And most recently, after moving across the country to the San Francisco Bay area, I worked as a writer and editor at Apple Computer in Cupertino, CA. It's been a long and winding road.
My publications include two books, Internet Adventures for Young Children, and Internet Quest, as well as articles in the San Jose Mercury News, Parents magazine, AOL's Digital City web site, and other online and print publications. I also freelance for several Silicon Valley corporations, and develop marketing and promotional materials for small business owners.
I have traveled and lived all over the world, from biking through China to living on a kibbutz in Israel, and my life experiences have provided me with the opportunity to meet and know people from all walks of life. I've crossed paths with the down and out, the destitute, and the poverty stricken, as well as those reaping the benefits of the technology boom, the intelligentsia of the academic world, and the people who have the power and influence to change the world. I like to think that we all have that power; it's just a matter of exercising it. The combination of my writing skills, my law school admission experience, and my social work background provide the backdrop for my work with Accepted.com. With this foundation, I help applicants present themselves and their written applications in the best possible light. I joined the editorial staff at Accepted.com in 2001, took a few years to devote full time to my family, and returned because I love this work. I see it as a wonderful opportunity to help people reach their potential and achieve their goals.
